The JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test), NAT (Nihongo Ability Test), and JPT (Japanese Proficiency Test) are standardized exams that evaluate Japanese language skills for non-native speakers. These tests are recognized by educational institutions and employers across Japan and abroad. While the JLPT is administered by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES), the NAT and JPT are managed by private testing organizations. Each test serves specific purposes—from language certification for study and work visas to academic placement and employment qualification.
The JLPT consists of five levels (N1–N5) and measures reading, listening, grammar, and vocabulary. It is held twice a year and does not include a speaking or writing section. The NAT and JPT, however, include similar content with more frequent testing schedules—monthly or bi-monthly. These exams assess practical Japanese skills, often covering kanji, sentence structure, and audio comprehension. Scoring varies by test, but all aim to evaluate a learner’s readiness for academic or professional use of Japanese. The tests are widely accepted for study in Japan and are useful for job applications, especially under student or SSW (Specified Skilled Worker) visa categories.
